Stellenbosch's Annandale Road presents a new addition to its stellar wineries – Haskell Vineyards. Wine Master Allan Mullins MULLINS gives his verdict .

HASKELL AEON SHIRAZ 2008

The soil in Haskell’s Aeon Vineyard consists of granite, gravel and sandstone resulting in a wine with dark fruit and a solid structure.

The colour is dense garnet, the nose has black pepper, cinnamon and blackberry and the palate comprises tightly packed layers of fruit and oak that are pleasing now but will develop in time.

Pair it with: Slow-cooked pork belly.

HASKELL PILLARS SHIRAZ 2008

Prior to release, this wine won Best Shiraz, Best Red Wine and Best Wine at the prestigious Tri-Nations Competition – a South African fi rst. A Platter’s fi ve-star rating quickly followed.

The sandy, loamy soil of this one-hectare vineyard results in a very aromatic, floral wine with an almost creamy texture and velvety tannins.

Pair it with: Spicy Moroccan dishes such as Moroccan spiced lamb chops with couscous

HASKELL IV 2007

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, this wine is matured for 18 months in French oak and the quality shows in the brilliant colour.

The nose reveals chocolate, blackcurrant, olive and cigar-box spiciness, while the palate is layered with black fruit and oak. The firm tannins have an underlying sweetness, promising good ageing potential.

Pair it with: Karoo lamb with mint and rosemary, or try our recipe for Braised lettuce with spring Karoo lamb and mushrooms
