Our resident wine master goes through three wines that are inspired by innovation
The key word at Simonsig Wine Estate in Stellenbosch – where over 25 wines are produced – is innovation, discovers Wine Master Allan Mullins
SIMONSIG CHENIN BLANC 2010
2010 celebrates the 42nd vintage of Simonsig Chenin Blanc. It over-delivers spectacularly on price each year, as
evidenced by its being nominated as the John Platter Wine Guide’s Superquaffer of the year in both 2008 and 2009. The lively bouquet is packed with peach, guava and citrus, while old Chenin Blanc vines give the palate rich layers of flavour and complexity. It is a perfect alfresco wine and would do justice to fresh Cape line fish.

WOOLWORTHS CHENIN BLANC/PINOTAGE 2009
A blend of two mainstream South African cultivars make up a "Proudly South African" blend, bottled exclusively by
Simonsig for Woolworths. The Pinotage and Chenin Blanc give this lively wine a delicate blush colour with the nose marrying the crisp guava, white peach and melon flavours of Chenin Blanc with the strawberry and raspberry tang of Pinotage. The palate is fruity and dry, making this an easy drinking wine for all occasions.
WOOLWORTHS PRICE: R44.95
SIMONSIG REDHILL PINOTAGE 2008
So you don’t like Pinotage? Open a bottle of this multi-award winning wine and be converted. Simonsig’s
famous Redhill vineyards yield compact bunches of tiny berries which contribute to its intensity. The bouquet impresses with redcurrant, mulberry and dark plum, while the 16 months’ oak maturation provides vanilla toastiness which combines with layers of succulent fruit to make up a palate that is both sensuous and complex. Drink it with the finest fillet steak.
