Readers' top 5 tips for using leftovers

We invited you to share with us your favourite ways of using leftovers. Reyaan Uys won Duane Heath's Springbok Kitchen for his ingenious use of leftover wine. Here is his winning tip, and others we really liked.

  • If you have red or white wine left over in bottles after entertaining, simply pour the wine into small plastic bags and use in future recipes calling for wine. - Reyaan Uys

  • Chop over-ripe tomatoes and freeze to use later in stews or curries. - Meryl Erasumus

  • Always keep some Woolworths ready-made puff pastry in the freezer. That way, if you're left with extra chicken, you can simply mix it with a simple home-made mushroom sauce and make a delicious pie - Sue Singh

  • Never throw away sour milk. Use it to make pancake or crumpet batter - Gail Head

  • For a filling savoury bake, mix leftover rice with cooked spinach, 2 beaten eggs, grated cheese, fresh herbs and seasoning and bake for 20 minutes until golden - Cathy Badenhorst
