Soup is our favourite soul food but also an easy way to treat guests. After all, nothings says 'welcome' more than a great-tasting, toe-warming winter soup. While toast is a classic accompaniment, there are so many other ways to up the ante. Here are some great ideas for sides and toppings.

WHAT TO SERVE WITH YOUR SOUP

TOMATO BASED SOUPS
Serve or top with:
- Grilled fish dropped into the soup, as suggested above
- Salt-and-pepper croutons
- Slices of torn, crisp Woolworths heat-and-eat Portuguese rolls or ciabatta
- A dollop of creme fraiche or cream
- A spoonful of olive tapenade
- A grilled cheese sandwich
BEAN OR DRIED PEA SOUPS
Serve or top with:
- Bockwurst, which is a German veal sausage, or Chourizo, a cured pork sausage from Portugal. Cut into bite-sized medallions and add along with the beans.

- torn fennel fronds
- a few chopped anchovies
- grated lemon rind
- thick slices of French bread with herb butter
- chopped sundried tomato

- a dollop of aïoli
VEGETABLE SOUPS

- roast mustard seeds
- root vegetable crisps (for smooth soups)
- browned butter
- fried carrot or parsnip shavings
- toasted Gruyere cheese sandwiches
