Woolworths Making the Difference programme
Woolworths Making the Difference programme

Woolworths Making the Difference Primary School Educational Programme targets Grade 4 learners, their educators and parents through educator resources, parent talks and educational class outings.

Working closely with schools and the Department of Education, Woolworths has developed and produced a set of Grade 4 educator resources around the topics of nutrition education, healthy living and environmental awareness.

These educational modules draw on Woolworth’s significant corporate expertise and include Educator Notes, Illustrative Flashcards, Fun Activities, Worksheets, Classroom Posters and Assessment Strategies that relate to the curriculum of the Life Orientation Skills Learning Area.

Partners, such as the Sports Science Institute of South Africa, also contributed their expertise ensuring that teachers have access to the latest, expert information.

PARENT/TEACHER TALKS

Hosted by registered dieticians who share expertise, answer queries and address parents' concerns, these talks cover issues of immediate relevance and concern to modern parents, including:

  • The working mom's ‘quick and easy guide' to satisfying her child's nutritional needs.
  • The Diet Wars: tackling obesity and eating disorders.
  • How you can influence your child's behaviour through nutrition.
  • Are you on track when it comes to your child's diet and exercise?

WOOLWORTHS MAKING THE DIFFERENCE EDUCATIONAL OUTINGS

Few things are more impactful than first-hand experience, and the Making the Difference programme gives Grade 4 learners the opportunity to visit Woolworths stores, distribution centres and suppliers around the country, to experience some of the things they have learnt about in the classroom.

A visit to a Woolworths supplier, for instance, and then a store, allows the learners to experience the different steps in the supply chain, from growing vegetable seedlings, to harvesting and packing, delivery, and then finally product displays on Woolworths' shelves - bringing to life the pictures and words of the school lesson.

Educators are able to add real value to the classroom curriculum through these outings, and are able to take learners to a different level of discovery – beyond the pages of a textbook.

This programme currently reaches over 1000 schools in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein and Durban.
