Apples
Apples have been proven to protect against breast, liver and lung diseases and cancer, are effective in weight loss and diabetes management and help prevent Alzheimers disease.
Choose apples that are firm to the touch with no brown bruises. Large apples are more likely to be overripe than smaller ones.
Local fruits are at their best in terms of flavour, scent and texture when they ripen in Autumn.
There are thousands of varieties of which some 50 are grown in SA. The ones we find most are Gala, Pink Lady, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Braeburn and Fugi.
Granny Smith and Pink Lady both hold their shape well during cooking.
Preserve apples' crispness by storing them in the fridge.
