Strawberries

DID YOU KNOW?

The strawberry is part of the rose family.

• Strawberries are not true berries. The fleshy edible part of the fruit is a thickened stem from which the flower grows and the “seeds” are actually tiny fruits called achenes.

• Along with pomegranates and raspberries, strawberries are considered a good source of ellagic acid, a compound that has been shown to potentially prevent the growth of cancerous cells.

• It’s said that if you split a double strawberry with someone of the opposite sex, you’ll fall in love.

CHOOSE strawberries that are ruby red and fragrant, but still dry and firm to the touch with caps that are grass green and fresh looking. Strawberries do not ripen further after picking.

STORE strawberries in the fridge in a shallow, breathable punnet on kitchen paper to prevent the fruit from bruising and going soggy. Don’t wash until you’re ready to eat them.

USE within two days, while they’re still fresh.
